Visitors in the gallery will not be provided Art on the walls to leisurely view as is traditional, but instead will have to experience an adventure to find the art and sound.

March 19th - April 2nd / 2005: Shadowbox - Art to be viewed by its own light.

Shadowbox works to challange the beholders senses as well as to inspire wonder by eliminating all expected and natural sources of light. Confronting traditional exhibition practices, Shadowbox effectively transforms the gallery in to a matte black space wherein everything you see is a product of art as each piece has been selected according to it's artistic and luminescent qualities. This cast-off light inspires one to question the nature of vision, representation and reflection for what you see is because of the art, without it there would be no sight.

LASSO (Collective)

GABE CASTELLANOS,JESSIE-WRIGHT JACKSON, PAUL WINGERT, BRENDAN NAKAHARA, DAVE SINGLEY, PERRY LUBIN

// LASSO is kind of like a jazz session that has many parts, we don't share a loft space and listen to folk music and have painting time, that would be pretty rad though. most of us work shit jobs except gabe, i think he is nocturnal. we all have really generic american names except for perry, and the only girl in the group miss jessie jackson. we are just like you except we are in this loose ensemble called lasso and you aren't and that's not an elitist thing, i don't know what it is. everything is just real loose, otherwise it would be like work that doesn't pay. it's got to be free. we are more nature than street and we are fascinated by everyone. we do this so we don't get bored.

January 7th - February 10th / 2006

There is Nothing to See - a sound-based group show that explores the outer limits of sonic experience.

Running the gamut from the unsettling (Joe Colley?s sculpted mouths that emit animal distress calls) to the sublime (Peter Regli?s broken glass symphony), There Is Nothing To See is an aural train wreck of colliding techniques and processes.

Angel Sanchez-Borges resurrects Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix for a virtual jam session. Sarah Filley translates EEG readouts of a brain in the throes of a seizure for her composition, Cerebral Score. Jorge Boehringer?s record (fashioned from a felled redwood tree stump) grinds endlessly through the locked grooves of the tree?s growth rings. Tom Grimley?s exquisitely handcrafted instruments play themselves, as do Albert Ortega?s Wal Wart(s). For a more intimate experience, stick your head inside Sandy De Lissovoy?s audio cone or crawl inside Jacqueline Gordon?s sound-gathering geodesic dome. Betty Jo Costanzo?s tin can phones provide the lo-fi/no-tech counterpoint to the entire (dis)array.

fashion show - art show - performance

A spectacle of a group show dedicated to the dynamic, eclectic bay area we all live and work in. Through installation, painting, video, printmaking, sculpture, fashion, live performance, and more, we are tracing the influences of Funk, Figurative, and Mission School artists and celebrating the opulent variety of work emerging right now on both sides of the Bay Bridge.

The opening party includes a continuum of musical performances from traditional to electronic, fashions by local designers, and surprising social interventions.

All proceeds from the event goes to Visible Voice.

SHAPE
February 22nd – March 16th 2008
Opening Friday February 22nd 6-10PM

Shape is a group exhibition of artists from the United States and Canada addressing some of the influences that help define perceptions of the world.  The artists use common materials and tools while reflecting upon notions of visual information being pictorial codes understood by their culturally determined language.  This has resulted in unique forms and presentations that blur the spaces between the domestic, the urban, the industrial, and the political.   The works in Shape explore elements from the built environment helping to determine human

California Dreamin - Opening
Saturday March 22nd 7pm-11pm

THOMAS CALLAHAN is an artist from Brooklyn NY whose work explores cultural iconography. On view in our main gallery are a number of media based works that incorporate video and structure to create aspects of the California experience. His installations are results of an interest in the conceptual content of video, what it represents, and its ability to preserve people and re-create space; as well as driven by the artist’s other fascination with materials and structural engineering. Callahan’s hope is to push the usage of video further in his practice as he explores its nature of containment, preservation and cultural commentary. He has shown extensively both in the United States and in Italy

DECOY

Decoy, a group exhibition of sculpture, painting, video, and works on
paper, engages the political and psychological aspects of deception,
perception, cognition and abstraction at the Lobot Gallery in Oakland,
CA.  The exhibition will feature recent works by Patrick Blaeser,
Robert Burden, Ross Campbell, Diane Derr, Robert Jackson Harrington,
Claire Jackel, Whitney Lynn, Jana Rumberger and Brian Stinemetz.  The
Tea Set and other musical guests TBA.

Objects and animals in the natural world often take on environmental
elements to conceal or emphasize form and shape.  Similarly, humans
mimic surfaces and forms to convey contrary information, as with
counterfeit objects or misleading advertising.  The artists in this
exhibition create 'decoys' that reference actual forms, but bring
attention to the way(s) that surfaces often convey contrary
information, and how art objects often stand-in for what is already
out in the world.

Admission is free and open to the public

The Lineup is a showing of eight illustrators living and working in the Bay Area. Five of the contributors are actively involved in Illustration Bloc; a forum for independent publication and promotion. The Lineup is more than a group of artists showing together. It is a small cross section of friends and peers who have dedicated their lives to visual communication. Hope you enjoy.

EVERYWHEN

COMMUNITY VIROLOGY

This show is the result of releasing a constructed virus into Oakland.

The action of this virus is simple:::: It infects only Oakland artists and causes them to infect other Oakland artists.

The virus is initially within 6 people, each of these people will infect 6 more people, this process will happen 4 times resulting in 1554 artists being infected.

The PURPOSE of this virus is more complex than it seems, this is not only a show of quantity, it is about making connections. As Oakland rapidly develops new groups form and old groups dissapate. And while Oakland is composed of many communities it is also one community. This show is an attempt to remove control from individuals and give it to the community, the result will be the bringing together of a group no one person could form, but is entirely Oakland. The movement of the virus will be tracked, and presented visually, so at the end we will be able to discern how this group of artists has formed, and how we are all connected.
